Three-day Discussion of Youth in Philanthropy
July 15-17, 2009
Upstate Insitute at Colgate University
The Upstate Institute at Colgate University will provide an opportunity for primary, secondary and college educators to discover and discuss youth and student philanthropy programs at a conference scheduled for July 15-17, 2009 at Colgate University in Hamilton, New York. The conference will provide a route to sharing best practices as well as encouraging educational institutions in the region to develop curricula concerning philanthropy and civic engagement.
Speakers and panelists at the conference include David C. Hammack, Hiram C. Haydyn Professor of History at Case Western Reserve University and author of “Making the Nonprofit Sector in the United States” and “Globalization, Philanthropy, and Civil Society: Projecting Institutional Logistics Abroad”; James Allen Smith, Vice President and Director of Research and Education at the Rockefeller Archive Center; Peggy O’Shea, President and CEO of the Community Foundation of Herkimer and Oneida Counties, Inc.; Peter Dunn, President and CEO of the Central New York Community Foundation; and Ellen Percy Kraly, Director of the Upstate Institute at Colgate University.
The conference schedule includes a keynote on philanthropy and education, sessions on the history of philanthropy, altruism and personal development, global dimensions of philanthropy, and philanthropy and corporate America. Panelists will discuss what foundations are looking to fund, and speakers will conduct workshops on grantsmanship, research on philanthropy, and assessment. Time is also included for a discussion of pedagogical best practices and planning sessions.
The Upstate Institute currently supports two student philanthropy projects, each of which distributes money to not-for-profit organizations in the upstate region. The first is the Student Philanthropy Council, which is a yearlong program for Colgate students starting its fourth year. This program has received funding from the Brennan Family Foundation. The second is the Youth Philanthropy Project, which introduces the same model for philanthropy in education to high school juniors and seniors at Norwich High School. This program has received funding from the Frederick and Margaret L. Weyerhaeuser Foundation, the Community Foundation of South Central New York, and Chenango United Way.
Thanks to funding from the Frederick and Margaret L. Weyerhaeuser Foundation, there is no fee to attend the conference. In addition to all programming, on campus housing in a dormitory is included for the duration of the conference, as are all meals and transportation for conference activities. Transportation to and from campus is the responsibility of the attendee.

Service-Learning Academy 2009 National Summit on P-16 Service-Learning Leadership
September 21-22, 2009
University of Nebraska Omaha Scott Conference Center
There is no cost for registration for the Summit; travel, lodging and meals are covered as well. The event will be held at UNs Scott Conference Center and lodging will be provided at the adjacent Marriott Courtyard Omaha Aksarben Village. Flight details will be arranged with Travel and Transport at UNO. This email is intended to inform you about the event so that you can begin to plan for this premier opportunity. Only seven institutions will be selected ultimately.
If you would like to consider sending one representative from your higher education institution to the event, note that you will be required to select and bring along one representative from a PK-12 school/district with whom you partner through service-learning. Start making your PK-12 school/district partner selection and contacts today! You will not be selected to come without a current and sustainable, partnering PK-12 school/district representative.
**PK-12 school/district partners: if you wish to be invited, forward this email to your higher education partner!
The Summit on P-16 Service-Learning Leadership we are inviting you to is not a typical conference-styled engagement roundtable discussion format will allow for open discussion. The summit discussion sessions will center on leading successful collaborative P-16 service-learning implementation based on research-based indicators and strategies that define and support sustainability and institutionalization. The event format will allow participants a chance to function as a working group over the two days to share best practices and program challenges, and then construct strategies to advance program goals. Institution representatives should not prepare formal papers and presentations to share, but should plan to bring along artifacts about their institutions and their engagement with the schools.
Let us know of your interest and availability to participate. However, your intent to participate does not guarantee selection; we will only select 7 interested higher education institutions and their partners--14 total individuals. To help us better plan for this event, please answer three questions:
1. Are you willing and able to attend or send one representative from your institution the summit? (Answer and mailing information is needed by March 26th; an application and registration packet will be sent)
2. Have you identified one PK-12 school/district partner that is willing and able to attend the summit, as well? (Answer needed by April 23rd)
3. If selected, will you be able to make and document travel and lodging plans as early as June 1st? (We cover the costs, but require an early commitment.)
If you have any initial questions, feel free to contact: shanify@unomaha.edu or (402) 554-3880.
